Privacy Policy: our Bible memorization app

This is a supplement to the Growing Godly Privacy Policy, which covers all of our tools and still applies here in full. This page describes exactly what this one app collects and, more importantly, what it never does. Where this page is more specific than the main policy, this page is the accurate one for this app.
It is written to be read, not to be survived.
The short version
Your verses live on your device. You can use the whole app without an account and without ever connecting to the internet.
When you recite a verse out loud, the speech is recognized on your device and is never sent to us or to anyone else.
When you import verses from a screenshot, the picture is read on your device and then discarded. We keep only the verse references it found, never the image.
We do not use advertising, we do not track you across other apps, and we never sell your information.
When you open a study read, we send the verse you are studying to an AI service to write the commentary. We send the verse and nothing about you.
One tap exports everything you have. One tap deletes your account and its data.
What stays on your device, always
Your verses and review history. Until and unless you make an account, every verse you add and every review you do is stored only on your phone. Delete the app and that local data is gone with it, which is exactly why we offer accounts and export, below.
Your voice. Speaking a verse for grading uses your device's own speech recognition. The audio and the transcript are used in the moment to score your recitation and are not uploaded, stored by us, or shared. There is no upload path for audio anywhere in the app.
Screenshots you import. If you import verses from a photo or screenshot, the image is read on your device to find the verse references, and then the image is discarded. We never upload it and never keep it. We keep only the references it found, for example "John 3:16", which then load from the app's built-in Bible.
What we collect, and only if you choose it
You can use the app fully without giving us any of this. We receive it only when you take an action that requires it.
If you create an account with Apple, Google, or your email: your email address, and the verses and review history you choose to sync so they are backed up and follow you to another device. This is used to run your account, sync, and back up your data. It is linked to your account. We do not use it for advertising.
If you buy Plus or Lifetime: the purchase is processed by the app store, Apple or Google, and recorded through our payments provider, RevenueCat, so the app knows what you have unlocked. We do not receive or store your card number. The app store handles payment. Purchase records are linked to your account.
Anonymized usage. To understand what is working, we collect anonymized, bounded events, for example "a review was completed", through PostHog. These carry no verse text and no message content, and are tied to an anonymous identifier, not to you by name. You are never tracked across other apps, and there is no advertising identifier use.
The study reads, and the one thing we send out
The Study tab can write a short commentary, a closer look, or a reflection on the verse you are studying. Those are written by an AI service, and this is the one place where something leaves your phone even if you never make an account. We want to be exact about what that is.
What we send: the verse reference, the verse text itself, and which of the three reads you asked for. That is all of it. We do not send your name, your email, your account, an id for your phone, your other verses, or anything about how you have been doing. The verse text we send is the public-domain Bible text that came built into the app, the same words already on your screen.
Who writes it: the reads are generated by Anthropic's Claude models, through a server we run. The key that talks to that service lives on our server and never in the app, which is the reason the request goes through us at all.
What we keep: the finished read, stored under a fingerprint of the verse text rather than under your name. Study reads are written once per passage and then shared with everyone who opens that passage, which is why they appear instantly after the first time. We also keep a count of which passages get opened, and, if you tap "Yes" or "Report" under a read, that rating. None of those records has a column for who you are. They are counts about passages, not about people.
What this means in practice: we can tell that Psalm 23 was opened four hundred times. We cannot tell that you opened it, and neither can anyone who obtains our database, because the information simply is not there.
What we never collect
No advertising or cross-app tracking. There are no ad SDKs in the app and no use of the advertising identifier. Apple's App Tracking Transparency does not apply because nothing here tracks you across apps or websites.
No location, no contacts, no photo library scanning. Importing from a screenshot reads only the single image you pick, in the moment, and then discards it.
No selling of your data. Ever.
How long we keep it, and how you stay in control
Export everything, one tap. From the app you can export all your verses and review history at any time, to keep or move wherever you like. This works with or without an account.
Delete your account, one tap. Deleting your account removes your synced data from our systems.
Backups. If you have an account, we keep a rolling backup so your work can be restored if something goes wrong. Backups are retained for 30 days and then deleted.
Your rights. Depending on where you live, including under GDPR in the EU and UK and CCPA and CPRA in California, you have the right to access, export, correct, and delete your data, and to withdraw consent. The export and delete controls above are how you exercise most of these directly. For anything else, contact us and we will help.
Children
The app is intended for a general audience of believers and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this supplement
If we change what the app collects, we will update this page and its effective date before the change takes effect. Because the app runs local-first, most changes will make it collect less, not more.
